Our Story

"Every community has a story. Ours is a story of language, culture, service and belonging."

More than twenty-five years ago, a small group of passionate Tamil families came together with a shared vision—to create a place where our language, culture and traditions would continue to flourish, even while living thousands of kilometres away from our ancestral homeland.

From that vision, Muth Tamil Sangam was born.

Founded in 2000 and incorporated in New Zealand on 5 September 2001, Muth Tamil Sangam has grown from humble beginnings into one of New Zealand's most respected Tamil community organisations. What has remained unchanged throughout our journey is the spirit on which the Sangam was built: a spirit of volunteerism, friendship and an unwavering commitment to serving our community.

For us, Muth Tamil Sangam has never simply been an organisation.

It has been a place where children proudly speak their first Tamil words, where young people discover confidence and leadership, where families gather to celebrate festivals that remind us of home, where artists share their gifts, where friendships become lifelong and where every generation finds a sense of belonging.

Over the years, we have had the privilege of bringing our community together through Tamil language education, cultural festivals, Planet FM Tamil Radio, youth leadership programmes, sporting events, health initiatives, blood donation campaigns and countless acts of community service. Every programme reflects our belief that preserving our heritage and serving our community are inseparable.

None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary people behind the scenes. Every milestone in our journey has been shaped by founders who dared to dream, Presidents who provided leadership, committee members who gave their time, teachers who inspired young minds, volunteers who worked tirelessly, sponsors who believed in our vision and families who entrusted us with preserving their heritage.

Their dedication has created far more than an organisation—it has created a community built on compassion, respect, generosity and unity.

As we celebrate more than twenty-five years of service, we look back with immense gratitude and pride. We honour those who laid the foundations upon which we continue to build, and we celebrate the countless individuals whose quiet acts of service have touched the lives of so many.

Yet our story is far from complete.

Every child who joins our Tamil School, every family that becomes part of our community, every volunteer who offers their time and every new friendship formed through the Sangam becomes another chapter in a story that continues to grow with each passing year.

As we look towards the future, our purpose remains as clear today as it was when we first began—to preserve the beauty of the Tamil language, celebrate our rich cultural heritage, strengthen our community through service and ensure that future generations inherit not only our traditions, but also the values that define who we are.

This is our story.

A story written by generations of volunteers.

A story carried forward by families.

A story inspired by culture.

A story strengthened through service.

A story that continues with you.

Welcome to the Muth Tamil Sangam family.
